Section 1

The Five Core Numbers

A Pythagorean reading rests on five numbers. Three are drawn from the letters of the name; two are drawn from the birth date.

Destiny Number: The sum of every letter of the full name, reduced to a single digit (or master number). The mission encoded in the name.; Sometimes called the Expression Number. It speaks to the work the bearer is given to do, the signature their name carries through every introduction and every signed document.; Calculate the Destiny Number →
Soul Urge Number: The sum of the vowels of the full name. The inner longing, the heart's true desire.; Also called the Heart's Desire. Where the Destiny names the mission, the Soul Urge names what the bearer wants underneath the mission. Personality Number: The sum of the consonants of the full name. How the bearer is read by the world before they have spoken.; Also called the Outer Personality. The first impression the bearer makes, the face strangers meet first, the impression that precedes any words.; Calculate the Personality →
Life Path Number: The sum of the birth month, day, and year, each reduced and then summed. The arc encoded in the date of arrival.; The most important number in a chart. Where the Destiny is the mission of the name, the Life Path is the journey of the bearer. Together they form the foundation of a reading.; Calculate the Life Path →
Birth Day Number: The day of the month, reduced. A signature within the larger Life Path.; Often the most personal of the five core numbers. The 17th and the 26th both reduce to 8, but they carry different qualitative weight in the tradition.; Calculate the Birth Day →

Section 2

Derived & Hidden Numbers

Beyond the five core numbers, a deep reading examines several derived signatures drawn from the letters of the name and the math between numbers.

Maturity Number: Life Path + Destiny, reduced. The bearer's later self, activating around age 45-50.; Often described as the "future you" reveal. Tells the bearer who they grow into after the early arcs settle.
Hidden Passion: The most-repeated digit among the letters of the full name. The underground river beneath the surface chart.; Reveals the obsession the bearer keeps returning to, often without naming it. If two or more digits tie for the highest count, the tradition reads them as joint Hidden Passions.
Karmic Lessons: The digits 1-9 that are NOT represented by any letter in the name. Each missing digit is a lesson the bearer is here to learn without inherited fluency.; A name that contains no letters summing to 7 leaves the bearer with the Karmic Lesson of the 7: they must learn depth, introspection, and patience the hard way. Some bearers have no missing digits; this is rare and is itself a quiet inheritance.
Achievement Number: Destiny + Life Path, reduced. The Number of Maturity (different from the Maturity Number above) in some lineages.; Lineages differ on whether the Achievement and the Maturity are the same calculation or distinct. We treat them as distinct: the Achievement is what becomes possible only after the early arcs are walked.
Subconscious Self: 9 minus the count of missing numbers in the name. Indicates self-confidence and reaction under pressure.
Balance Number: The first letters of the first and last name. How the bearer balances emotionally under stress.

Section 3

Master Numbers & Karmic Patterns

Three numbers in the Pythagorean system are never reduced. They are called the master numbers. Four other compound numbers carry karmic significance.

Master Numbers: The 11, 22, and 33. Preserved and never reduced when they appear as a final total. Rare, intensified, demanding.; The 11 is the visionary (octave of 2). The 22 is the master builder (octave of 4). The 33 is the master teacher and healer (octave of 6). A master number must appear as a destination, not a way station: 11 → 2 in the reduction chain does not count.; The 11 →
Karmic Debt Numbers: The compound numbers 13, 14, 16, and 19. When any of the five core numbers reduces through one of these before reaching its final single digit, it carries the corresponding karmic lesson.; 13/4 = self-discipline failure. 14/5 = freedom abused. 16/7 = love misused or the collapse of ego. 19/1 = self-righteousness or power misused. About 30% of charts carry at least one karmic debt.
Octave: The way master numbers relate to their reduced form: a higher frequency of the same essence. The 11 is the 2 at a higher octave; the 22 is the 4; the 33 is the 6.
Reduction Chain: The sequence of intermediate values produced when a compound number is reduced step by step until reaching a single digit (or stopping at a master).; A sum of 47 reduces 47 → 4+7=11. The 11 here is a master, so reduction stops; the final value is 11. A sum of 31 reduces 31 → 3+1=4. The final value is 4 with no karmic debt and no master.

Section 4

Time-Based Numbers

A Pythagorean chart contains not only the static signatures of name and date but also a series of time-based numbers that describe how the bearer's life moves through phases.

Pinnacles: Four life-stage numbers drawn from the birth date. Each pinnacle governs a span of years.; First Pinnacle: birth through about age 27. Second Pinnacle: 9 years. Third Pinnacle: 9 more years. Fourth Pinnacle: onward. Each is a sweep of life with its own qualitative theme.
Life Path Cycles: Three sweeping arcs of the life: the Formative Cycle (birth to ~28, drawn from the birth month), the Productive Cycle (~28 to ~56, drawn from the birth day), and the Harvest Cycle (~56 onward, drawn from the birth year).
Challenges: Single-digit lessons the bearer is built to wrestle with. There are typically three: the First Minor, the Second Minor, and the Major Challenge that runs through the whole life.
Personal Year: The numerological energy governing one specific calendar year for the bearer. Calculated from birth month + birth day + the current year, reduced.; Personal Years cycle through 1 through 9 every nine years, with the occasional master year (11, 22, 33). A 1 Personal Year is a year of beginnings; a 7 is a year of inwardness; a 9 is a year of completion.; Calculate your Personal Year →
Personal Month: A finer-grained forecast: the energy of a specific calendar month within the bearer's Personal Year. Calculated by adding the Personal Year and the calendar month, reduced.

Section 5

Compatibility & Relationships

Pythagorean numerology reads the bond between two bearers through their numbers, most commonly the Life Path.

Compatibility (Pythagorean): The harmony, neutrality, or tension between two Life Paths. The classical compatibility table sorts every pairing into one of three categories.; The Compatibility Chart →
Harmonious Pairing: Two Life Paths that tend in the same direction. Each partner sees what the other is built for; the bond is "easy" by default.
Pairing of Tension: Two Life Paths that pull against each other. Not a verdict; many of the longest unions are between Life Paths the chart calls challenging.
Family Resonance: A reading of how a bearer's Destiny harmonizes (or tensions) with each parent's Life Path. Included in every Sacred Name Generator reading when parent details are provided.

Section 6

The Pythagorean Tradition

The foundational concepts of the lineage that descends from Pythagoras of Samos through the Hermetic schools to the modern compendia.

Pythagorean System: The numerological system used here. Each letter A through I is assigned 1 through 9; the pattern then repeats (J=1, K=2, S=1, etc.).; Distinct from the Chaldean system, which uses different letter-to-number assignments and is rooted in earlier Mesopotamian tradition. Reduce: To sum the digits of a number until arriving at a single digit (or stopping at a master number 11, 22, 33).
Compound Number: Any number larger than a single digit. The total before reduction.
Tetraktys: The sacred figure of Pythagorean tradition: ten points arranged as a triangle (1+2+3+4=10). Symbol of the cosmos as a hierarchy of number.
Monad / Dyad / Triad / Tetrad: Pythagorean names for the principles of 1, 2, 3, and 4. The Monad is unity; the Dyad is relation; the Triad is the first complete number; the Tetrad is the principle of solidity.
Y as Vowel: The letter Y is treated as a vowel only when no adjacent letter is a vowel. "Lyra" has Y between L and R: vowel. "Yannis" has Y at the start with A next: consonant.

Section 7

Hermetic Correspondences

The Pythagorean tradition aligns each number with a planet, an element, and a position on the Tree of Life. These correspondences enrich the reading.

Planetary Rulers: Each number corresponds to a planet: Sun=1, Moon=2, Jupiter=3, Saturn or Uranus=4, Mercury=5, Venus=6, Neptune=7, Saturn=8, Mars=9, Uranus=11, Saturn=22, Jupiter-Venus=33.
Elements: Each number is also associated with one of the four classical elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth) by its qualitative nature.
Sephirotic Resonance: Each single digit maps to a sephirah on the kabbalistic Tree of Life: Kether=1, Chokmah=2, Binah=3, Chesed=4, Geburah=5, Tiphareth=6, Netzach=7, Hod=8, Yesod=9, Malkuth=10.
Cornerstone Letter: The first letter of the first name. Carries disproportionate weight; reveals how the bearer approaches what is new.
Capstone Letter: The last letter of the last name. Reveals how the bearer finishes what they begin.

Modern Variants

Twentieth-century developments that sit alongside the classical Pythagorean tradition.

Angel Numbers: Repeating-digit sequences (111, 222, 333, etc.) interpreted as signals or messages. A modern New Age tradition, not classical Pythagorean.; We read angel numbers as the underlying single digit amplified by repetition, paired with the classical Pythagorean reading of that digit. Numerology vs. Astrology: Numerology reads structure (letters and dates); astrology reads timing and celestial position. They are distinct disciplines that often inform each other but are not interchangeable.
Destiny vs. Life Path: The Destiny is drawn from the letters of the name; the Life Path is drawn from the date of birth. The most common confusion in modern numerology. The two are read together but never conflated.
