What is Pythagorean Numerology? A Primer

Numerology, as practiced in this tradition, descends from Pythagoras of Samos through a long line of Hermetic and kabbalistic schools, through Cornelius Agrippa and the Renaissance occultists, through the modern compendia of the late nineteenth century, into the readings we perform today. It is not horoscope. It is not divination by chance. It is the reading of structure, of correspondences between letters, numbers, and the planetary and elemental forces that thinking traditions have aligned them with for two and a half millennia.

The lineage in one paragraph

Pythagoras (sixth century BCE) taught that all things are number, that the cosmos is built from mathematical relations rather than from substance, and that the soul carries number with it as it moves through forms. His school treated arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy as four faces of a single discipline. 11 is the master number of vision and intuition. It is the 2 raised to a higher octave. The bearer of an 11 carries an electric quality, a tendency toward sudden insight, a difficulty living by the rules that govern ordinary numbers.

22 is the master number of building. It is the 4 at full magnitude. The bearer of a 22 is built for construction at scale: the institution, the body of work, the legacy that outlasts the maker by generations.

33 is the master number of teaching and healing. It is the 6 raised to its highest expression. It is the rarest of the three. The bearer of a 33 carries a compassionate presence that changes a room without trying.
